P1 Service Assisting Customers With R-22 Phase-out

R22 Phase Out

LENEXA, Kan. – P1 Service is responding to new OSHA regulations by providing customers with updated information on how to proactively convert and replace HVAC systems.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a phase-out of the production and importation of ozone-depleting substances under the Clean Air Act. The act calls for the former industry-standard refrigerant R-22 to be phased-out. R-22 will not be produced anymore in the U.S. after Jan. 1, 2020.

In 2014, the EPA adjusted the R-22 allowances, resulting in a 57 percent cutback in 2015’s production of HCFC-22. Between 2018 and 2019 there will be a reduction of almost 55 percent. Finally, on Jan. 1, 2020, production will be completely halted.

On average, 35 to 40 percent of HVAC repairs require the refrigerant system to be recharged. By 2020, the entire industry will rely solely on recycled or reclaimed R-22 refrigerant. Customers should be aware and informed of possible solutions and alternatives. A simple repair that once cost $1,500 can cost ten times that or more. P1 can provide customers with multiple solutions.

P1’s team of knowledgeable and experienced craftsmen can evaluate existing equipment and propose two options. The first option is to retrofit or repair old equipment. Rather than replacing an entire system, P1 can convert old systems to use EPA approved refrigerants. The second option is to replace equipment. P1 can proactively replace systems and install new, more efficient equipment meeting EPA standards.
