When every associate - from executives, to foremen, to project managers and field personnel – consistently dedicate themselves to the company’s safety culture every day, it gets noticed.

Innovation and associate buy-in are just two of the reasons P1 Group was recently awarded the highly competitive Safety Excellence Award from the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) and CNA Insurance.

“It is a fiercely competitive program in the category of ‘over 1M man hours worked’, which results in only the best of the best competing for the awards,” MCAA Director of Safety and Health Peter Chaney said. “Participants are required to describe their respective safety programs in detail, why they believe they deserve the award, and how they achieved safety excellence.”

The Safety Awards Selection Taskforce carefully evaluates each submission looking for safety leadership, an advanced safety culture, effective leading indicators of safety performance, and innovative safety initiatives that helped the company achieve such a high degree of safety excellence.

P1 Group is no stranger to Safety awards, having won this award twice, in 2007 and 2014. P1 Group Vice President Don Campbell says one reason is P1 associates’ consistent immersion – and buy-in – to the program.

“What sets P1 Group apart is our leadership, including foremen and project managers, who walk and talk our safety culture every day, encouraging all associates to understand it and put it into practice – no excuses.”

Don notes one way to help field personnel feel ownership of the safety program is transparency with numbers.

“We update the field monthly during safety talks and at project sites with critical numbers, like Incident Rate, so they always know where the company stands,” Don said.

In addition to transparency with numbers is transparency with accidents. P1 Group’s Safety Division sends out a monthly APB that includes that month’s Incident Rate, OSHA Recordables, and Hours Worked.

If there are any recordable incidents, they are reported along with the corrective action plan so associates throughout the company can learn from them.

P1 Group’s Safety Division even came up with a way to spread safety awareness to the families of our associates through the annual P1 Group Safety Calendar, made solely from art by kids related to our associates. Children ages K-8th belonging, or related, to P1 associates, enter their hand-drawn artwork for a chance to be featured in one of the 12 months.

Congratulations to the P1 Safety Team and all associates who put the P1 Group tagline “Safety First…Quality Always” into play every day.
