Why We Do What We Do: Building and Protecting Life-Changing Research

When we build and maintain the mechanics of a building, we don’t always get to hear the stories of how that facility impacts quality of life for the people who use it, benefit from it, or work in it.

This is not so in the case of the Children’s Mercy Hospital Research Institute tower. This is a story that makes the connection between what we do and why it matters.

Going Where the Technology Is (Part II) P1 Building Technologies

Understanding Building Technologies

P1 Group's Building Technologies (BT) division may focus on a specific need, such as a sound system for a school or security system for a manufacturing facility. But it can also cover a much greater expanse, such as Low Voltage systems for an entire campus.

The following projects illustrate the diversity of P1 BT capabilities.

P1 Project Profile: The University of Kansas Health System Cambridge Cancer Treatment Center

Working on new construction around an active hospital is challenging enough, but the University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS) Cambridge Cancer Treatment Center project adds multiple floors to the mix – levels 8, 9, 10, and 12.

This means P1 Group had to create a high level of efficiency across capabilities. As usual, the team was ready for the challenge with innovations in fabrication, virtual design, and inventory management that have helped this impressive electrical project run smoothly.

Saint Luke’s East Hospital Flex Capacity Expansion: Single Source Approach Helps P1 Group Navigate Timely Challenges

P1 Group has been serving the healthcare community both locally and nationally with single-source facility solutions for many years, and our recent work on the Saint Luke’s East Hospital Flex Capacity Expansion is no exception. The SLE Expansion project will address the hospital’s need for growth by expanding the emergency department. It includes a small renovation of the ER waiting room, but the bulk of the job is the construction of additional ER patient rooms.

P1 is putting virtual design and construction, fabrication, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technologies construction (MEPT) capabilities to work, all while navigating new safety mandates and challenges due to COVID-19. Although P1 has done MEPT projects before, this will be the first MEPT project in the Kansas City metro area. The project has only been underway about five months, but Senior Project Manager Eric Affolter has already noticed a difference in the efficiency with which the project is progressing. “Having all trades within the company working together has really increased the level of communication and efficiency you just can’t get when you work with multiple entities,” Eric said. “Especially with all the COVID-19 guidelines we are now required to follow.” The SLE Expansion project is scheduled for completion in April of 2021.

Lawrence Memorial Hospital Sterile Processing Addition

LMH-Sterile-Processing-Addition

One of the most common challenges P1 Group faces on the job is working around unforeseeable conditions, such as weather or busy facilities that can’t be shut down for construction. In many instances, our field teams have to think quick to come up with rescheduling solutions and demonstrate extreme care working around staff and facility users, sometimes in critical environments.

Such was the case with the recent 8,000 sq. ft. sterile processing addition to Lawrence Memorial Hospital (LMH).

Project Profile: Research Medical Center/Central Plant

Technology and Fabrication Team up to Drive Efficiency

PIPE
Retrofit projects like the Research Medical Center/Brookside Central Plant in Kansas City can be a challenge, but thanks to P1 Group’s
Virtual Design Construction (VDC) and Fabrication capabilities, P1 has demonstrated efficiency and agility in moving this project
toward completion.

“This design build project entails transforming existing space at the RMC campus into a newly functioning central plant that will provide chilled water and steam for approximately 196,000 square feet of medical office space and 40,000 square feet of hospital space,” Project Manager Bo Wempe said.

The pipe fabrication portion of the project began with the VDC department’s 3D laser scanner which scans the space to capture extremely accurate jobsite data. The VDC department uses the scanned data to develop a virtual piping model and create shop drawings for fabrication.

P1 earned high praise for the team’s efforts to connect the system during night shifts to maintain operational status during business hours. This made the outage much shorter – lasting a few hours instead of days.

More efficient by going paperless

To reduce inefficiencies and utilize new technologies, P1 is replacing stacks of paper drawings at many project sites with electronic plan documents that can be viewed on tablets in the field.

P1 has also integrated our SharePoint project management system with Bluebeam, a PDF solution that is used by construction, architecture and engineering firms to mark up and edit electronic documents. This allows P1 to provide up-to-date project information to the project foremen, at their fingertips.
