Edwards Air Force Base is located approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles and is designated as the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) thanks largely to its favorable year-round weather and large, naturally flat landing area. Notable tests at Edwards Air Force Base include the breaking of the sound barrier and the Space Shuttle’s first landings.
