It’s no surprise that after a decade of working on projects in the Joplin, Mo. area, P1 Group feels for the tornado-stricken city. Because P1 Group continually employs electricians from the Joplin area and due to the company’s vast resources, we were one of the best suited contractors working in the area to respond to the tornado disaster. As a result, P1 Group was contacted by Weston Solutions, the contractor heading up the disaster response team, on the evening of Friday, June 3 and had electricians on the job the following morning.
P1 Group’s initial concentration was to safely clear fallen overhead utilities that became entangled in the wreckage. P1’s experienced crew cut the wires at strategic points while ensuring no potential electrical hazard existed. The scope of work has expanded to include electrical support relating to the inspection of damaged houses to verify the status of electrical power to allow for demolition.
In an effort to better support the city of Joplin in the wake of the disaster, as well as create work opportunities for IBEW Local 95 electricians employed by P1 Group, we have expanded our operations to the Joplin area with the opening of a new office. The new P1 facility is located in the Joplin-Webb City Industrial Park.
Currently the Electrical Division in Kansas City is heading up this operation. Electrical Project Manager Casey Walsh, who has been in Joplin to help manage the project, is P1 Group’s point of contact.
“When you see the devastation in person, it’s so much worse than television and photos can illustrate,” Walsh said. “It makes you want to contribute to the cause, to find some way to help. And we have employees that live down there, so it just hits close to home. We’re fortunate to be in a position to help Joplin, and that’s exactly what we plan to do.”
