LENEXA, Kan. – Patrick Canny, a University of Kansas freshman, is the first recipient of  the Kevin Lane Memorial Scholarship. Patrick recently visited P1 Group’s Lenexa office to meet with P1 Group associates.

Kevin Lane, an electrical foreman, passed away nearly three years ago after working at P1 for more than 27 years. The P1 Group executive team wanted to honor him with a scholarship in his name and asked Karen Lane, Kevin’s surviving spouse who also works at P1, where she would like the scholarship to be set up. She asked that it be designated for students at the KU School of Engineering.

“I appreciate that the scholarship was set up in Kevin’s memory,” Karen said. “Paying for college is hard and Kevin would have liked the fact that students who need financial assistance are getting some help.”

The P1 Annual Charity Golf Tournament raised money for the scholarship fund in 2013 and 2014, and P1 Group provided matching fund donations. KU Endowment is managing the scholarship fund and also oversees the award process.

Patrick, from Fort Collins, CO, is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. He decided to attend KU after he was selected for the School of Engineering’s highly competitive SELF program, a leadership development program. While visiting P1, he said it is tough for his family to pay out of state tuition because he has a younger sibling with significant health issues.

“I am honored and also thankful for this incredible support. For me to attend KU, it was crucial for me to have some scholarship assistance,” he said.

The P1 associates who met with Patrick were impressed with his accomplishments in his short time at KU. He has joined several clubs and organizations, including Honors Program Student Council, the KU Battlebots Team and Freshman Engineering Student Council. He also competes at yoyo competitions and recently placed 8th at the US National Yoyo Competition. (If you are curious about competitive  yo-yoing, here is a video of Patrick.)
